  • How to choose sunglasses

How do I choose the right pair of sunglasses for my child?

Every parent knows that persuading a child to wear sunglasses can be tricky, especially if they are very young.

Here are some top tips on how to pick the right pair for your child:

Make sure the sunglasses fit properly

It is fair to say that if the sunglasses do not fit, they are unlikely to ever be worn.

The fit will vary according to the age of the child and their face shape. Finding the right fit can be particularly difficult for babies and toddlers because of their relatively flat, wide nose bridges and facial bone structure.

When in doubt, seek expert advice from your local optician.

Generally, the frame has to sit comfortably on the nose bridge without touching the cheeks. The tips of the arms should curl over and rest behind the ears.

These points are key to ensuring that the weight of the frame is evenly distributed across the face – to prevent pressure sores and to stop the sunglasses from sliding off.

Adjustable nose pieces and side arms are very useful features for all active children and to improve the fit.

    Choose high-quality lenses

High-quality lenses will provide the right level of eye protection and help maintain good visual development. Lenses need to be at least 99% UV protective as well as provide high optical clarity.

It is worth noting that while some lenses offer high UV protection, this does not mean they are optically superior.

Good optical clarity in a lens is essential for seeing images clearly and for promoting visual development.

One way to test optical clarity is to hold the frame at arms length and fixate on a straight object in the distance while moving the frame from side to side.

There needs to be a minimal distortion of the object when viewed through good quality lenses. In other words, you will be able to see the object clearly if the lens has good optical clarity.

    Lens material and safety

Lens material is an important safety factor, especially for children.

Choose shatterproof plastic lenses such as polycarbonate or CR39 lenses which should be tested for impact resistance, to ensure they are safe for children and sports wearers.

Avoid toy sunglasses as they tend to have sub-standard lenses which provide no protection.

Always check the label or contact the manufacturer to find out whether the sunglasses you are choosing comply with British Standards or other recognised international industry standards

  • International Standards

What do the different UV labels mean?

There are many different types of UV labels attached to sunglass lenses or swing tags.

All sunglasses imported into the UK and sold in reputable high street stores should have the British and European safety standard label BS EN 1836:2005. They should block up to 99.99% of harmful UV light.

Some sunglasses also comply with the US standard ANSI Z80.3:2001, and the stricter Australian standard AS/NZS 1067:2003.

Check for all three safety standard labels when planning a trip to a sunny destination.

All Zoobug sunlenses comply with all three international safety standards.

UV400 is another optical industry standard and represents the maximum level (or 100%) of UV protection. Lenses carrying this rating block out all UV light up to 400nm, which includes UVA, UVB and UVC.
